Austin Pets Alive! was founded by local attorney James Collins and his then-wife Judy Ford as an all-volunteer advocacy group to help increase homeless companion animal lifesaving. Our story hasn’t necessarily been for the faint of heart. Austin Pets Alive! began when vulnerable, homeless pets truly needed us the most. When we were first imagined, Austin had a kill-rate of 87% – today, we have a save-rate of 97%. Through hardships, we have found inspiration; and through this inspiration, we have saved lives.
APA! is not a typical shelter setting. Our innovative programs save more than 10,000 animals from euthanasia annually, keeping Austin no-kill since 2011. Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping to Keep Austin No Kill. Since 2008, APA! has saved over 100,000 dogs and cats from being killed at Central Texas shelters.
